welcome! [+ suggest songs for our playlist]

Well met, traveler, and welcome to this Haven of the Knights. I’m Maya Joelle, and I’m so glad you’re here! If this is your first time (and it probably is, since we just launched today), we invite you to learn more about us:

Music is an important part of the Tales. The thrush sings. The moon and sun raise their voices in the Songs of Spheres (and sometimes, characters remember the truth and hear the Songs again). Leo sings ridiculous songs to Una, Eanrin composes odes in honor of Gleamdren (and Starflower — but shhh, he doesn’t want anyone to know that), and Rose Red sings even in Death’s realm.

Thus, when we started to create this site, I made a playlist inspired by the series. (It’s right over there in our sidebar if you want to listen to it.) There are two problems with it — it’s not very long (only 14 songs) and only a few people besides me had any input.

Here are the songs currently on the playlist (and why they remind us of Goldstone):

  • ALL THINGS TOGETHER by Andrew Peterson // A reminder of the One who rules all worlds, near and far and in between.
  • BREATH AND LIFE by Audiomachine // This beautiful instrumental would be a great soundtrack for a Goldstone movie someday.
  • CARRY THE FIRE by Andrew Peterson // Remember your true task, Knights.
  • THE MENDED WOOD by Joel Clarkson // Because someday all things will be new. Even the Wood Between.
  • RIVENDELL by Howard Shore // Another lovely instrumental. This one reminds me of the Haven.
  • STAY, I PRAY YOU from Anastasia // Many Goldstone characters, though they travel far and wide, are attached to their homelands. This song especially makes me think of Imraldera.
  • WE’LL MEET TOMORROW from Titanic: The Musical // Fairbird and Imraldera’s song. Or Akilun and Etanun’s.
  • DO YOU LOVE ME from Fiddler on the Roof // This is kind of how I picture Imraldera’s eventual and inevitable realization that she loves Eanrin.
  • MEMORY from Cats // Hymlumé’s song.
  • MY FATHER’S WORLD by Jadon Lavik // “All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.”
  • THE FAR COUNTRY by Andrew Peterson // Someday we’ll all cross the Final Water. “In the sin-fraught cities of the dying and the dead… We ache for what is lost.” {suggested by StarJoy}
  • THIS IS MY FATHER’S WORLD by Jill Phillips // Just another reminder of Who owns the forest (and, of course, His songs).
  • GOLDSTONE by Crystal Fragments // An instrumental with a perfect name.
  • THE CALL by Regina Spektor // This song was written for Prince Caspian (the movie), but it honestly could be referring to any fantasy book. Or life in general. It makes me cry sometimes. {suggested by Hawkeye}

So. As the title of this post suggests, today I want to know what songs remind YOU of Goldstone! I can’t promise to put all of them in the playlist, but I would love to add a lot more songs. Comment and tell us: what songs should be on our playlist, and why? Why do these songs remind you of the Tales? Which song makes you think of Eanrin, or Leo, or Sairu, or anyone?

I look forward to reading your answers (and hopefully finding many more Songs of Goldstone Wood)!

// Maya

  1. The entire album Life from audiomachine is amazing and most of the songs remind me of scenes/sections throughout the Tales of Goldstone Wood series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5KW4pvr2B0

    Another one with same comments is La Belle Epoque: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp_rhJFN5X0

    Both are fully instrumental, with sweet and bittersweet and victorious undertones.

    Have any of you heard of these?

      1. xD I own a three CD collection from them, and Until We Have Faces is my favorite (those tracks are the best on the album, IMO), but I’ve never actually studied much about them.

        Looks like according to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Until_We_Have_Faces

        It’s true.

        HOW EPIC IS THAT?!!!

        You should probably listen to the entire thing, Maya. 🙂

        (I think I spotted a YouTube video about Behind the Scenes of this album the other day but I haven’t watched it yet, so maybe watch that for more – reliable – info?)

        I’m not typically a listener to hard rock, but RED is rather good, especially when they bring the more classical orchestra. 🙂 ❤ The lyrics are awesome. I found them via a fan anime video a loooong time ago on AES's site that featured Let It Burn – I think the video depicted the scene in which Aethelbald kills Una as the Dragon.

  2. I’m quite late to this forum, not sure if this is even still active. Anyway, I just discovered this and it’s absolutely amazing. This series deserves so much more praise.

    I wanted to recommend “Creature” by Half Alive. It reminds me strongly of Eanrin (after he became a Knight that is). It could very well be any of the Knights though (possibly Imraldera?) It also has a slightly strange eerie feeling that reminds me of the Between.

    Thanks for this amazing playlist! 😀
